Tip of the Week: Schedule Google Chats Ahead of Time

Every day, countless chats are sent between colleagues as they go about their duties. If your business uses Google Chat to send these messages, then you have the capability of scheduling chats for a later date. This neat little feature is hidden right in plain sight, too, so don’t feel bad about not seeing it. The question now is what are you going to use it for, and how do you schedule chats in the first place?

Schedule a Chat for a Later Date and Time in Google Chat

The first step is to open Google Chat and select the conversation you want to schedule your message for. Maybe you want to send your coworker Karen a message to remind her of a task at a certain time. Obviously, Karen should give herself a reminder, but if she is incapable of that, Google Chat lets you easily do this for her without experiencing too much frustration or inconvenience on your part.

Once you have the conversation with Karen open, type out your message as usual, but don’t send it.

We’ll use the example of Karen wanting a reminder to submit her time sheet at the end of the day this Friday. She needs the reminder because she keeps forgetting. Once you’ve got the message drafted, stop right there.

Instead of clicking the right-facing arrow to send your message, click the smaller button next to it with the arrow pointing down.

You should now see some options from the menu, including the following:

“Tomorrow at 8:00 AM”
“Tomorrow at 1:00 PM”
“Next Monday at 8:00 AM”

What you’re looking for is the option to Pick a custom time. This lets you select a precise time and date for the message to send. You can also stack messages in this way and edit them as needed if something changes between now and then. All you have to do is select See all scheduled messages. You should be able to review and revise them from here.
